Wik Castle was built in the 15th century and was originally a fortress, which during the Middle Ages was one of the strongest fortresses in the Mälardalen region. Today, it is the best-preserved late medieval castle in central Sweden.
Ekeby Village is a unique settlement that originated during the Middle Ages. Despite continuous development, the village has retained its main features into modern times. Today, the village is preserved as an almost museum-like environment. Together with a knowledgeable guide, we will explore the village, which now consists of a double row of houses with a longitudinal street and a ring road. Outside the village site, you’ll find the blacksmith shop, the mill, and several cottages. Upon arrival, we’ll enjoy morning coffee and sandwiches before delving into the history and the well-preserved village.
Nestled in a bay of Lake Mälaren lies Wik Castle, beautifully serene. Today, it houses a folk high school and conference facilities surrounded by a large natural area with a beach and hiking trails, attracting many nature enthusiasts. A lunch will be served, and we’ll gather around the table.
Lady Ramborg, the founder of the estate of Wik, will welcome us for a tour of the castle. She will regale us with tales of intriguing characters who have lived here throughout the centuries. Heroic deeds, tangled family relationships, scandals, life stories, ghosts, and legends will accompany our journey through the castle. There are no elevators in the castle, but plenty of stairs, and for those who are willing and brave, a visit to the dungeon is possible.
