Öregrund is one of Sweden’s best-preserved wooden towns, a charming idyll where you can feel the proximity of the sea.
In the past, Forsmark Ironworks stood out for the fantastic iron produced here. The ironworks was also among the first in Sweden to generate electricity from its own hydroelectric power plant, and the manor house in the ironworks was Uppland’s first house with electric lighting. Today, it can be said that Forsmark Ironworks still has locally produced electricity, albeit from the nuclear power plants a few kilometers away.
Morning coffee is served at Forsmark Inn, located in a beautiful ironworks setting, adjacent to the ironworks ponds and the whitewashed smithy residences. Together with our guide, we take a stroll, exploring the Manor House, the beautiful English park, and the houses on Bruksgatan, which stretches from the Manor House to the church.
Öregrund was founded by fishermen in the late 15th century, later becoming a shipping port for Uppland’s iron during the 17th and 18th centuries, and subsequently a prominent port of call during the heyday of sailing ships in the 19th century. Today, Öregrund is a summer town where people gather and enjoy themselves, bustling with activity during the summer months. With a guide, we take a leisurely walk on foot through cozy alleys and along the shoreline, hearing stories of how the town came to be, about maritime history, and the seaside resort life from the 19th and 20th centuries. We’ll enjoy lunch at the Strandhotellet, also known as Tullbacken.
